GAMBIT (Guided AI for Magnetic Boride/Carbide Intermetallic Technologies) has been selected for the U.S. Department of Energy's ARPA-E MAGNITO program, an initiative dedicated to the discovery and development of new permanent magnet materials that outperform today's best.
Permanent magnets are the quiet workhorses of the modern economy. They spin the motors in electric vehicles, generate power in wind turbines, and actuate everything from robotics to heat pumps. Demand for high-performance magnets is growing faster than the materials that make them, and the best magnets known today were discovered more than four decades ago.
GAMBIT aims to change that. Over the next three years, a four-institution team will search for new magnetic compounds in chemical spaces that remain largely unexplored: boride, carbide, and borocarbide intermetallics. The project unites machine-learning prediction, high-throughput first-principles computation, advanced synthesis, and rapid magnetic characterization in a single closed loop: models propose candidate materials, laboratories make and measure them, and every result feeds back to sharpen the next round of predictions.
The team is led by Jakoah Brgoch at the University of Houston, joined by Joshua Bocarsly (University of Houston), Geoffroy Hautier (Rice University), Jamie Neilson (Colorado State University), and Matthew McDermott (Newfound Materials).
